A feature is when one artist adds their voice to another artist’s song. It sounds easy. It is not easy. It is two calendars, three time zones, and one file that everyone must open before Friday.
This week, the label inbox filled up with requests. Forty of them. All polite. All starting with the same words: “just one quick verse.” There is no such thing as a quick verse. There is only the first draft, the second draft, and the two a.m. message that says “what if we try something else.”
We said yes to some. We said not now to others. We said nothing to the one person who attached a nine-minute song with no title and no hello.
The best features are the ones where two people make a third sound that neither one could make alone. That is worth the calendar trouble. The rest is just noise with good manners.
